about

Chris Caryl Welch began teaching himself to play piano in 2001. Now in 2010 this album exhibits the progress of that relationship; a patchwork of original motifs and ideas developed over nine years of technical exploration. It is a showcasing of a continual process: balancing calculated risk with radical abandonment. It is an arrangement of impromptu playing. Not knowing theory or how to read music, Chris explores the possibilities of playing unadulterated songs, maintaining a personal idea for musical virtue by incorporating as many modalities and styles that can be simultaneously experienced. It is conceptual art; a portrait gallery for the imagination and its unceasing unpredictability.

The recordings on this album are made from three instruments over the course of three sittings. The first sitting incorporates a Mason & Hamlin grand piano. The second sitting, a Steinway & Sons grand. The third, Chris's personal 1964 Mason & Hamlin upright at home.

about

Chris Caryl Welch

I am a self taught pianist. I began playing piano in 2001. I have no prior musical training. My goal is to have "mastered" a self-stylized approach at playing improvisational piano by age 35. I hope to combine concepts in many forms of musical traditions; classical, jazz, folk, etc. I also hope to record a body of work that spans my lifetime. The idea is to never play the same thing twice. ... more
